Tech Update

In the midst of a national movement covered by outlets such as Ballotpedia's Hall Pass and K-12Dive, some states and districts are restricting screen time, and others are considering legislation that would permit parents to opt their students out of being issued a school device or receiving digital instruction in the classroom. However, at CVUSD, the opposite is happening. The final technology section of CVUSD's Parent / Guardian Notifications (https://resources.finalsite.net/images/v1759492667/cajonvalleynet/kmvoybt7k0otzjvp3wtx/25_26_Annual_Notification.pdf) includes student guidelines about unauthorized recordings, cell phones, District tech, and internet safety. However, what technology services will be available for student use is not included. I have heard that CVUSD sent out a technology and AI survey to families and staff. However, the Board was asked to take action last month without any presentation of this stakeholder input. The majority of the Board updated policies 4040 and 6163.4, allowing students access to generative AI. Under these updated policies, parental consent will only be required for "non-District-sanctioned open generative AI services." So, what, you may ask, are the sanctioned services? No one knows, although we were assured the vetting requirements will become public. However, nowhere will a parent be able to find what generative AI services are actually being offered to their children. Students are not only able to utilize these services without parent permission or notification, but we won't even know which services they are.
