Delving into Discipline

Today I had a great meeting with two district staff members and another board member to discuss discipline routines both at the site levels and within the district office.  Sparked by parent comments at board meetings, this was not only a fact-finding mission to review specific disciplinary actions taken during the 2023-2024 school year, but also learn about disciplinary procedures in an effort to ensure that our district is in compliance with the California Education Code.  The meeting was thought-provoking and informative, but we left with some follow-up actions in hand as well.  In order to communicate clear expectations to students and parents as we prepare for a successful year, we are hoping to bring clarity to some muddy terminology regarding disciplinable offenses.  We will continue to advocate for complete and timely communications with families and civility on all sides, even when dealing with something as unpleasant as enforcing an orderly learning environment.
