A Library is Still a Place of Potential

Not too long ago I attended Bostonia Global's Learning Through Interest Exhibition.  At that event, I was pleasantly surprised by a library table hosted by Library and Media Technician Lauren Kingsolver.  Her display highlighted not only reading-focused initiatives, but also a lunch program where students could have a place to connect by playing games, doing puzzles, creating, and perusing books.  I knew I had to come back and see this wonder in progress, and when I did, the students were clearly enjoying themselves and thriving in this alternative to the traditional outdoor recreation space available during lunch. In addition to the lunchtime program and her normal library and material management duties, Mrs. Kingsolver's creative and solution-oriented approach has also led her to feature students' handwritten book reviews and create optional literacy activities while students are utilizing the library.  While Mrs. Kingsolver is not a credentialed librarian who teaches whole-class lessons, she has brought a renewed vision and vigor.  Both the administration's and Mrs. Kingsolver's passion and commitment to helping students feel connected to both each other and adults have led to a flourishing lunch endeavor that continues to grow in quantity and quality, and the library has furthermore been revived as a place where students are excited to seek out knowledge and community.
